Multichannel Sampling - HORIBA PI-200-I Raman Analyzer

When process complexity demands visibility across multiple streams simultaneously, the HORIBA PI-200-I multi-channel Raman analyzer consolidates that monitoring into a single system. Unlike traditional approaches that require deploying and maintaining a separate analyzer for each process stream, the PI-200-I integrates an 18-channel fiber multiplexer into one compact instrument, measuring up to 17 distinct sampling points in real time, with no sample conditioning required.

Your Simple, Cost-efficient Turnkey Solution

HORIBA Process Instruments delivers complete Process Raman solutions. Choosing a Raman process analyzer with multi-channel sampling capability means deploying a system that is calibrated for your specific process. Every PI-200-I deployment includes spectra collection from your process samples, chemometric model development, model maintenance, and ongoing support, with the first year of modeling services included. This is backed by more than 30 years of Raman instrumentation development.

One Analyzer, Up to 17 Process Streams

Deploying a separate analyzer for each process stream multiplies capital cost, maintenance burden, and physical footprint. The PI-200-I is designed to replace and simplify that infrastructure. A single spectrograph and CCD detector handle sequential analysis across up to 17 sampling points, delivering real-time measurements from each. The result is a significantly reduced equipment footprint, lower total cost of ownership, and a single system to calibrate, maintain, and support across your entire process.

Detection limits reach below 100 ppm for many compounds, with some applications achieving single-digit ppm sensitivity, making the PI-200-I appropriate for both high-concentration stream monitoring and trace-level detection.

Fiber Multiplexer Features

The PI-200-I's 18-channel fiber multiplexer is what makes multi-stream monitoring from a single analyzer possible. A servo motor automatically routes the excitation laser light and collected Raman scattering signals between sampling probes, enabling sequential analysis of multiple locations within the process without manual intervention. Channel 1 is permanently reserved as a built-in performance monitor, running automated instrument health checks hourly.

  • Optical Multiplexer: The fiber multiplexer is specifically engineered to operate across all channels and probes without compromising signal quality. Excitation laser light is directed sequentially to each sampling probe, and the collected Raman signal is returned to the spectrograph for analysis, maintaining measurement integrity regardless of how many streams are being monitored.

  • Sequential Analysis: Each process stream is analyzed in sequence, with the multiplexer cycling through all active channels automatically. This allows a single spectrograph and detector to generate real-time data across multiple streams without the cost or complexity of parallel analyzer systems.

  • User-Configurable Sequence and Data Frequency: Analysis sequence and measurement frequency are fully configurable by the end user. You determine how often each stream is sampled and in what order, allowing the system to be tailored to the specific monitoring priorities and timing requirements of your process.

  • Grab Sample Correlation: The on-demand sampling option allows you to control multiplexer timing with respect to grab sample collection location, ensuring tight timestamp correlation between PI-200-I data and laboratory reference data. This simplifies model validation and makes it straightforward to compare online predictions against offline analysis.

Designed for Continuous Operation

Analyzer downtime in a process environment carries a direct operational cost. The PI-200-I is built to minimize costs with redundant backup lasers that switch automatically in the event of a primary laser fault, contributing to greater than 99.9% uptime. Automatic X- and Y-axis wavelength calibration runs continuously, and both the laser and spectrograph are temperature-controlled for long-term measurement stability.

Real-Time, Multi-Parameter Chemometrics

A single scan from the PI-200-I produces simultaneous predictions for multiple quality parameters across each monitored stream. Chemometric models are built using ASTM-consistent procedures and samples collected from your actual process conditions, which are then validated against laboratory reference data before deployment. Once in operation, the system delivers continuous real-time output in place of routine lab analysis, reducing testing frequency and enabling faster, more informed process adjustments.

Process Integration

The PI-200-I connects to plant control systems via TCP/IP, serial Modbus 4-20 mA outputs, and OPC-UA. Fiber optic probes extend up to 1,150 ft (350 m), allowing the analyzer cabinet to be positioned in a safe area while sampling from remote or hazardous locations. The system is available in a General Purpose 19" rack enclosure or a Purged Enclosure for classified area installations. Laser power is available up to 500 mW, including in ATEX and IECEx certified configurations.

Applications for Multi-Channel Analyzers

The PI-200-I is used across a broad range of industrial processes where monitoring multiple streams from a single analyzer is both technically necessary and economically justified. Common applications include:
