Crude Distillation Monitoring with Raman Spectroscopy

All refineries utilize atmospheric distillation units as a fundamental part of their operations, and more advanced facilities often include vacuum distillation units to further refine heavier fractions. These distillation units separate crude oil into distinct petroleum fractions based on boiling points through a carefully designed process. A series of trays within the distillation column allows heated vapors to rise and condense at varying levels, isolating liquids into their respective fractions.

The temperature gradient within the column drives the separation process. The top of the distillation column is cooler than the bottom, causing lighter fractions to vaporize and rise before condensing into liquids at the upper trays. These fractions include gasoline and naphtha. Medium-weight fractions such as diesel, kerosene, and jet fuel condense in the middle of the column, while heavier fractions like gas oils collect lower in the tower. The heaviest components with the highest boiling points, such as residual oils, settle at the bottom of the distillation column.
