Alkylation Unit Monitoring

The alkylation unit is a vital conversion process in petroleum refineries, transforming isobutane and low molecular weight alkenes (such as propylene and butylene) into alkylate, a high-octane gasoline blending component. This process plays a crucial role in enhancing gasoline quality, improving performance, and meeting market demands for cleaner-burning fuels.

The Alkylation Process

Alkylation reactions occur in the liquid phase under controlled conditions, using hydrofluoric acid (HF) or sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) as a catalyst. Maintaining a low temperature—typically around 70°F for H₂SO₄ and 100°F for HF—is critical for selective reactions and achieving optimal product quality. High pressures are applied to keep the hydrocarbons and acid in liquid form, while a high isobutane-to-olefin ratio ensures maximum conversion efficiency.

The reaction mixture flows through a series of steps:

  1. Reaction Phase: The hydrocarbons react in the presence of the acid catalyst under controlled temperature and pressure.
  2. Acid Recovery: The acid is separated in an acid settler, recovered, and reused in the reactor.
  3. Fractionation: The reaction products are fractionated to separate gaseous LPG, propane, and n-butane, with alkylate as the primary product.

Careful control of operating variables, including acid strength, reaction temperature, and mixing efficiency, is essential for high selectivity and conversion rates. The exothermic nature of alkylation reactions also necessitates precise temperature management to avoid runaway reactions and ensure product consistency.

Advanced Monitoring with HORIBA Process Instruments

HORIBA Process Instruments provides cutting-edge solutions for monitoring critical parameters in alkylation units. Designed for high sensitivity, these instruments can detect concentrations below 100 ppm and, in some cases, single-digit ppm levels. Utilizing a diode laser optimized for fiber optics, the system illuminates and collects data via a flow cell with a sapphire window, ensuring durability and precision.

Collected radiation is analyzed through a monochromator equipped with a diffraction grating and a 4-stage cooled CCD camera, enabling rapid and accurate detection. The system's design minimizes energy loss, ensuring efficient and reliable performance even in demanding refinery environments.

By delivering real-time insights into feed composition and reaction conditions, HORIBA’s solutions empower refineries to:

  • Maintain optimal isobutane-to-olefin ratios
  • Monitor acid strength and catalyst activity
  • Ensure precise temperature control during the highly exothermic reaction
  • Maximize alkylate yield and quality while reducing waste and operational risks.
